Social media, particularly TikTok, has become a powerful platform for shaping global popular culture and influencing how cultural content is created, shared, and consumed. Its algorithm-driven system enables users from diverse backgrounds to participate in global cultural exchanges while offering opportunities to promote local cultural identity. TikTok allows communities, educators, and content creators to introduce traditional arts, languages, customs, cuisine, and historical heritage to broad audiences through creative and engaging short-form videos. These features can increase cultural awareness, especially among younger generations, and support the preservation of local traditions in the digital era. Despite these opportunities, local culture faces significant challenges due to the dominance of global popular culture. Local creators often struggle to compete with viral international content, overcome stereotypes, and maintain the authenticity of cultural representation while adapting to rapidly changing digital trends. There is also a risk of cultural simplification and commercialization in pursuit of online popularity. To address these challenges, effective strategies include producing educational and culturally authentic content, collaborating with creators from different cultural backgrounds, utilizing popular trends creatively, and encouraging partnerships among governments, educational institutions, tourism organizations, and local communities. By balancing creativity, authenticity, and digital innovation, TikTok can serve as an effective medium for promoting local cultural identity while contributing to cultural diversity in the global digital landscape.
