Abstract

A child's behavior in daily life will reflect his character.  The character of a child is the result of the upbringing and habits of parents.  From an early age, children are taught and accustomed to doing and behaving well.  Here parents play an important role in educating their children so that in the future they will continue to behave well in accordance with the norms that apply in society.  It is hoped that this research can identify the role of parents in shaping children's character, how to build children's character, the approaches used, as well as the obstacles that arise and efforts that can be made to shape children's character.  The research method used is a descriptive method.  From this research it appears that family is an important factor in a child's education.  A child's character comes from the family.  Because children up to the age of 18 years will spend 60-80% of their time with their families.  Until this age, they still need parents and family warmth.  So character education should start from the family, because it is the first environment for the growth of a child's character.  After family, in the world of character education this has become a mandatory teaching since elementary school.  Elementary school children are still in the concrete operational development stage.  The stage where their intelligence begins to develop to think logically and systematically.  Therefore, the education of character for elementary school is the key to changing the younger generation for the better.
